Stress Free Temperature Management - Global Experts

At NJR Rail, we bring unrivalled expertise in the science of Stress Free Temperature (SFT) — the critical factor in preventing rail buckles during extreme heat and fractures when the weather turns cool. Rail buckling can occur even in seemingly stable environments, and when it does, the consequences can be severe, including the risk of train derailments. Managing SFT is not just about initial installation; it requires ongoing understanding, measurement, and intervention as conditions change over time.
Within our team, we have two recognised specialists who are leaders in the field of SFT management. With decades of practical experience, they deliver independent measuring services, corrective policy development, and hands-on training for staff. We can also help establish proper maintenance processes and advise clients on best practice to ensure contractors are compliant. All new and replaced rail should be subject to rigorous SFT management and policy compliance to guarantee long-term stability.
We understand that SFT is not static — it evolves with traffic patterns, rail stress, and time. That’s why our approach goes beyond measurement: we help operators understand the science, take corrective action, and build long-term resilience into their track systems.
Stress Free Temperature Managment Training
Designed to build competence in the precise techniques required for long-term track stability. The course covers the fundamentals of SFT theory, practical methods for identifying neutral temperature, and the points in the track system where thermal stress is most likely to accumulate. Participants are guided through proven measuring techniques — including rail temperature capture, stress release methods, and neutral temperature determination — with an emphasis on accuracy and repeatability.
Training also addresses SFT calculations in detail, showing how to apply data correctly to assess current condition, predict future risk, and decide when corrective action is required. We incorporate hands-on sessions with specialist measuring equipment, ensuring engineers and supervisors are confident in both the use of the tools and the interpretation of results. By combining calculation, field measurement, and monitoring best practice, our programme equips teams to manage SFT with rigour, reduce the risk of buckles and breaks, and ensure compliance with rail safety standards.Rail,
